MARY LOU D’AURAY
FINE ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Welcome to my website! I hope you enjoy the paintings
and the photographs!

I traveled to many places during the summer of 2009—Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, and Cody, Wyoming—with a stay at the Flinter Ranch in Shell, Wyoming! Later I visited the coast of Oregon, stopped in Sandpoint, Idaho and then in August stayed a few days each in London, Paris, Sicily and Venice (for the biennale!)! At the end of September I spent a full week painting watercolors with gail MacDaniel and dear friends at Ghost Ranch, in Abiquiu, New Mexico. In all these places, I took loads of photographs (some will eventually find their way to my website!) and returned with several ideas for future art pieces.

During the past year, I have been completing a series of oils and watercolors inspired by a July 2008 trip to Iceland… a wild and incredibly beautiful island that left me with deep reverence for the spirit of our sacred and unpredictable planet. During just a single visit to Iceland one comes face-to-face with erupting steaming geysers, icy glaciers, raw mountains, colorful geothermal springs, deep blue-grey oceans, jagged rocks uplifted by tectonic force, smoky-green lichen-covered lava… and unpolluted air! Thankfully!

Painting is quiet time—deep thinking time—and as I worked on these pieces these last few months, I began to realize that somehow the negative effects of global warming needed to be expressed. Because a lot of this series is about ice and water, I knew that some of the pieces would depict my interpretation of the worrisome and accelerating Arctic ice melt. A showing of the Iceland Series will take place in Brooklyn, New York in the spring of 2010. The location will be at The Barn (www.ilovebarn.com). Any profits from the opening will be donated to Icelandic artists.
