Unveiling the Power of Art to Create Social Change
Greetings from my studio in Northern California, and Happy New Year!
I believe deeply that art is a powerful tool for social change, and my own artistic journey reflects my desire to make a difference in the world. Much of my artwork is focused on helping direct attention to the dangers of nuclear power; the pollution caused by burning fossil fuels; as well as other global concerns.
Earlier this year, I traveled through the Caribbean by cruise ship but was disheartened by the pollution from bunker fuel, prompting me to reconsider future cruises. This fuel, also used in global shipping, has significant environmental impacts.
In September 2024, a transformative week at Ghost Ranch with fellow creatives allowed for reflection and connection with nature, where I also met an inspiring artist from New Mexico, Judy Tuwaletstiwa.
Additionally, I continue to create drawings for my upcoming book on using art for trauma healing.

News:
Autumn 2024 culminated in the creation of the Art and Healthy Aging Center (or AHA Center) at the University of Southern California Davis School of Gerentology. The Center is dedicated to advancing research and insight into the interplay between artists’ engagement and the aging process, and in particular, advancing the field of Neuroarts.
In November, I had two paintings accepted into an Intergenerational juried art exhibit at the Sausalito Center for the Arts.
Interviewed by Deeper Green Horizons for their studio series on YouTube - “Unleashing Artistic Passion: Finding and Channeling Inspiration with Mary Lou Dauray”
My recent life and work has focused on exploring trauma through art, bringing awareness to the effects of nuclear power, war and pollution, participating in meaningful exhibitions, and engaging in creative community experiences.
I wish for you in 2025 opportunities to allow art to increase your joy - theatre, painting, cooking, singing. Embrace it!
Until next time…
Mary Lou
Art Tip:
The line drawings I have been making these past months required only a pen and paper for tools. Sitting quietly and putting pen to paper while letting the pen lead the way brought a sense of quiet and peace. One does not have to go all out and buy lots of art supplies. It is just you, the paper and a pen! Simple!
