Coal
The coal series paintings reflect my awareness of the all-too-toxic pollution caused by coal mining, transporting and burning. Coal plants are our nation’s top source of carbon dioxide emissions which are the primary cause of global warming. Acid rain, smog and toxic air are the result. My paintings refer to the tragic environmental toll caused by the use of this fossil fuel.
While painting these works I listened to many original coal miner song recordings, which were filled with sorrow, pain and suffering. I had a huge chunk of black anthracite coal in front of me as I did my paintings in the studio.
Here is a verse from “The Miner’s Doom”, an old Welsh ballad. Many miners were Welsh in the coal mining regions.
“Now his wife had been dreaming of her husband so dearly,
She's seen him in danger - " God help me," she cried;
Too true was the dream of a poor woman's sorrow.
The rope broke ascending; her dear husband died.
Their home that morning was as jov-al as any,
But a dark cloud came rolling straight o'er their door
A widow, three children are left for to mourn him;
The one that they ne'er will see any more”.
Burning Coal 9”w x 10” h Watercolor on paper 2014
This small piece depicts some of the toxic smoke and flames that burn when coal is ignited.
Burning Coal Train 30” w x 40”h Acrylic on canvas 2015
This painting was the last in my coal series of more than 40 artworks. I am concerned about the transporting of coal through pristine US land with destinations at maritime ports. Danger is ever present—especially should one of these cars derail.
Coal and Blue Heat 30”w x 30”h Acrylic on canvas 2014
I painted a series of artworks depicting my interpretations of how I viewed coal, I did quite a few paintings in a circular format. Maybe I was trying to encapsulate the negative aspects of coal and its negative effects on the health of people and the environment.
Coal and Fire 22”w x 30”h Acrylic 2015
There is a certain beauty in depicting fire, burning and heat. I attempted to bring those qualities to this illustration of burning coal.

I was experimenting with actual coal pieces in this artwork. This is an acrylic painting on wood with coal and resin.
Coal Seam 30”w x 22”h Acrylic and ink on gessoed paper 2014
While painting this piece, I enjoyed the process of carefully using a pen filled with India Ink to slowly outline the acrylic underpainting It was a meditation.
Polluting Smoke Stacks 9”w x 10”h Acrylic on Yupo paper 2014
One of the reasons I created a series depicting coal is to bring attention to the toxic effects of mining, transporting and burning of coal. This artwork illustrates thick smoke emanating from smokestacks of coal burning factories. The pollutants contain sulfur dioxide, particulates and nitrogen oxides which contribute to acid rain and respiratory illnesses among other diseases.
Shuttered Mine 22”w x 30”h Acrylic on Yupo paper 2014
Silence and despair seem to emanate from this picture of a shuttered coal mine. No longer a booming industry, coal mining and its devastating environmental effects dot the land where mining took place.
