Cool Cities
My husband published awesome travel guides to cool cities around the world. In 2007, I chose to reference eight of those cities I had visited by creating oil paintings on wood panels highlighting the color and hopefully some of the ambience of those places. I enjoyed the process!
Amsterdam 9”w x 12”h Oil on wooden panel 2007
I chose to represent this lovely city by abstracting a bicycle on a bridge. The city has an elaborate canal system and lovely gabled homes. Apparently cycling is the key to the city’s character!
Madrid 9”w x 12”h Oil on wooden panel 2007
The very heart of Hapsburg Madrid is the portico-lined Plaza Major and it is this plaza that I chose to paint! Apparently Madrid is known as the city of joy and life!
New Orleans 9”w x 12”h Oil on a wooden panel. 2007
New Orleans’ vibrant and talented music scene is just one reason to visit this melting pot of a city. The cuisine is another reason and be sure to indulge in eating the unforgettable, melt-in-your mouth sugary beignets at Café du Monde. I loved painting this picture!
New York City 9”w x 12”h h Oil on wooden panel 2007
There exist hundreds of yellow cabs, neon lights, tons of traffic, incredible architecture, great theater, etc. in the most exciting city in the world!
Paris 9” x 12” Oil on wooden panel 2007
The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of this magnificent city. Sometimes, at night, one can experience an amazing light show on the Tour Eiffel in hundreds of colors!
San Francisco 9”w x 12”h Oil on wooden panel 2007
Yes—the peace symbol…memories of Haight Ashbury in the 60’s! Also, one has to be in awe of the Golden Gate Bridge—another symbol of beauty, grace and strength…all qualities found in this city by the bay.
Sydney 9”w x 12” Oil on wooden panel 2007
The Sydney Opera House on the waterfront of this large city captured my imagination. I just had to interpret it in a painting!
Toronto 9”w x 12”h Oil on wooden panel 2007
This artwork is of the iconic, free-standing CN Tower, the tallest structure in Canada, North America and the Western Hemisphere! I just had to paint it and include it in my Cool Cities Series.
