When I have the good fortune to visit beautiful Hawaii, I become energized creatively by the deeply intense colors and the natural beauty. I know fun and sun to be the daily mantra, yet I use the time to quiet down and paint.

The 10 black sand beaches in Hawaii are formed from volcanic eruptions, with iron being the dominant mineral. The color contrasts between the sand, lava rocks, white foam, and beautiful blue water definitely tempt an artist to put the colors on canvas.

The gorgeous red orange Bougainville flowers provide spectacular passages of color, especially when adjacent to the black lava rocks on the Big Island. Then when one sees the stunning backdrop of ultramarine blue sea – what artist could resist painting this scenery? Certainly, not me!

There always exists special people, places and things. In this instance, a lone tree on the Big Island of Hawaii, silhouetted by the deep blue ocean, won my heart. The bees hover hungrily around it and I have been known to circumambulate around its base.

Occasionally one can view the Hawaiian island of Maui from the Big Island of Hawaii. If you look carefully, you can see Maui through the clouds in this small painting.

Frequently one can spot fog and rain hovering above the sunny Kohala Coast near Mauna Lani Point on the Big Island of Hawaii. You can swim and sun on the beach and, if you drive a few miles up the road toward Waimea, the temperature and weather change can be surprising!
