Ice and Iceland
The artwork you will find in this gallery was created during a two to three year period after a visit to Iceland… the land of rugged natural beauty, mystery and myth. It was in Iceland that I breathed completely non-polluted air and also saw the effects of climate warming.
Glacial Deposit 12”w x 16”h Watercolor 2013
I painted a number of watercolors about ice and the melting of ice seen in the Icelandic landscape.
Ice and Light 30”w x 40”h Acrylic 2015
Seeing an iceberg reflecting light is truly one of nature’s special gifts.
Ice and Plastic 24”w x 24”h Mixed Media on Paper 2013
This is one of the first paintings I created incorporating plastic as collage. I had a clear thought way back in 2009 that the plastic collecting in our oceans was being absorbed in the air as either rain or snow, thus depositing plastic particles everywhere – in our streams, icebergs and even in humans and animals.
Iceberg at Sunset 54”w x 54”h Acrylic on Gessoed Paper 2013
I experienced deep serenity while painting this picture. The dark blue sea supporting the iceberg felt majestic.
Iceberg 6”w x 6”h Acrylic and plastic on a wooden panel 2014
Another in my iceberg series with pieces of plastic adhered to the painted surface.
Iceberg Wasteland 90”w x 24”h Oil 2014
I have to admit that I did see a gorgeous photo on Google and it influenced this painting. I believe this was the first painting I created about icebergs.
Melting Icebergs 12”w x 16” h Watercolor 2014
Another watercolor referencing vistas in Iceland’s waters.
Snowy Night 30”w x 20”h Watercolor and Ink 2014
My visit to Iceland coincided with the days of summer. This watercolor seems to reflect what it might be like on a cold snowy day in Iceland.
Troll House 24”w x 40”h Oil 2014
I would look at every nook and cranny as we drove along the majestic scenery to try and spot a troll house. Finally, when back home, I did a painting of one.
Waterfall 24”w x 16”h Acrylic on Gessoed paper 2013
A painting medium such as watercolor barely can capture the stunning and spectacular waterfalls dotting the countryside in Iceland. I tried!
